Appalachia Outreach 2018

This year we have 46 MA students heading out to Manchester, KY to serve the community.  Add in the staff, parents, a group from Highland Academy and one student from Spring Valley Academy and we will have over 80 ready to make a difference in Manchester!  We will be staying in a local community center with 4 showers and nothing to lay down on but the floor in which we walk on.  However, that is all part of the mission experience!  Students and adults will be well fed as we have a top notch chef from Georgia making some gourmet meals.  Volunteers will be building an addition on to a house, building a playground, gutting and renovating another and hanging drywall in another home, among other things.  Each team of about 15 participants, will have two days to complete their tasks and give the homes/schoolyard a fresh makeover.   We will end the trip with Sabbath, and after the hard work, a day of rest and worship will be a welcome relief.

The Madison Advantage

After noticing the amount of trash lining Larkin Springs road as they travel to and from school, the Junior Class knew they had a choice… Complain or Act. So, they strapped on orange vests. Armed with trash grabbers and bags, they took on the neighborhood. Devoted Servants. That was their choice. That is the Madison Advantage.

Students to serve in Puerto Rico during Spring Break

We are excited about our Spring Break Mission Trip this year!  We have looked at a number of locations and feel led to go to Puerto Rico to assist in repairs and the continued recovery from last year’s hurricane.  We will be doing repair work at a local Adventist school and at numerous homes in the community.  We will be working out of a town called Las Piedras which is southeast of San Juan.  We will be staying at a local Adventist church and have hired a couple of the church members to cook authentic Puerto Rico cuisine while we are there.  The dates will be February 27-March 8, 2019.  We can take up to 40 participants on this trip, so first come first served sign-ups.  The cost will be $1100.  $100 down payment will reserve your spot on the list (please make checks out to Madison Academy).  Since Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, no passport is required. If you have any questions, please reach out to me.

Fitness Gram used to determine health of students

During assembly time, Wednesday, September 5, students changed out of school uniforms and into workout clothes and participated in the Fitness Gram test in the gym. This test measures student’s aerobic capacity in the pacer test, body composition with weight and height measurements, muscular strength in doing push-ups, muscular endurance in performing sit-ups and flexibility with the shoulder stretch and trunk lift. Those students that meet the national standards in each of these areas according to Coach Adams will have fewer health issues as they age and live longer.

The Fitness Gram replaced the Presidential Fitness tests in 2013 that included pull-ups, sit-ups, standing broad jump, shuttle run, 50-yard dash.  The Fitness Gram, developed by the Cooper Institute, is now used nationwide to determine elementary and high school age children health levels.

Just under 50% of our student population met the Fitness Gram standards.  Here are the names of those that met or excelled beyond the standards.

The Wheels on the bus go round and round

Thanks to a gift from donors last year we were able to purchase and wrap two 12-passenger vans. These vans have taken our students all over… from drama outings to sports tournaments, from volunteering at the 403 Center to field trips to the Chamber of Commerce. These vans have been well used and truly loved. Private support is what makes it possible for us to not only transport our students around Middle TN, but also promote our school at the same time. If you want to help support any projects, contact our Director of Development, Taleah Valles-Peters.
